Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds: An Honest Comparison

This is one of the first questions couples ask us in Bristol, and it deserves a straight answer rather than a sales pitch. We sell both lab-grown and natural diamonds, so we have no reason to steer you either way. Here is the honest comparison.
Chemically, they are the same thing
A lab-grown diamond is not an imitation like cubic zirconia or moissanite. It is carbon crystallised into diamond, identical to a mined stone in chemical composition, hardness, fire and brilliance. Even a jeweller with a loupe cannot tell them apart. It takes specialist laboratory equipment. Both can come with an independent grading report. IGI grades lab-grown diamonds on the familiar 4Cs. Since October 2025, GIA no longer gives lab-grown diamonds colour and clarity grades. Its reports describe them simply as Premium or Standard. Every centre stone we offer comes with its certificate, whatever its origin.
The price gap is real and significant
Because lab-grown diamonds can be produced to meet demand while natural ones must be found, the price difference is substantial. A lab-grown stone typically costs far less than a natural one of similar size and quality, which means the same budget buys a noticeably larger or higher-grade diamond. If size and sparkle per pound are your priority, lab-grown wins comfortably. If you want to understand exactly what those grades mean before you compare, our simple guide to the 4Cs is the place to start, and our guide to engagement ring costs covers the rest of the price.
Resale and long-term value
Here is the part some retailers gloss over. Natural diamonds hold value better over time because their supply is finite. Lab-grown prices have fallen as production has scaled, and they may fall further, so a lab-grown stone should be bought for love rather than as an asset. That said, we would gently point out that no engagement ring is really an investment. Very few people ever sell one, and a natural diamond bought at retail is not a savings account either. Buy the ring to be worn for a lifetime, not traded.
Sentiment and the romance question
For some people, the idea that a natural diamond formed over a billion years deep in the earth is part of the magic, and no laboratory can replicate that story. For others, the meaning lives entirely in the moment and the marriage, and the stone's origin is beside the point. Neither view is wrong. It is worth having this conversation honestly, because it matters more than any technical difference.
Ethics
Lab-grown diamonds sidestep mining altogether, which is why many buyers with environmental or human-rights concerns choose them, though growing diamonds does use significant energy. On the natural side, the picture has improved enormously. If ethics is your deciding factor, ask us where a natural diamond comes from and what assurances come with it, and expect direct answers. Any reputable jeweller will welcome those questions.
So who should pick which?
- Choose lab-grown if you want the biggest, brightest stone your budget allows, if the mining question sits badly with you, or if you would rather put the savings towards the wedding or a house deposit.
- Choose natural if the billion-year story is part of the romance for you, if holding value matters, or if you are drawn to owning something genuinely finite.
Some people arrive certain and change their mind after seeing both side by side. Whichever you lean towards, our bespoke ring builder lets you design your ring and choose a lab-grown or natural certified centre diamond, with a clear quote before anything is made.
